27 people from 8 different ski clubs left for Mammoth Mountain on Sunday April 7, 2025. We
arrived with no major problems, got on the buses and headed for what turned out to be 4 bluebird
days of skiing. Sunscreen was a must for this trip. Our flight out to Reno was uneventful except
when we arrived in Las Vegas to connect to Reno, airport security was waiting to greet one of
the passengers (not in our group) who was not happy about something!
Monday morning, we woke up to a couple of inches of fresh snow but that was all we saw while
there. We had a welcome breakfast with breakfast burritos on Monday morning while listening to
representatives from Mammoth talk about the mountain and our trip. After breakfast we headed out
for guided mountain tours. We had 4 different tours depending on skiing ability. While on our
mountain tours, we had the opportunity to watch the solar eclipse since Trip Daddy provided
everyone on the trip with solar eclipse sunglasses. Even though only a partial eclipse (30%)
would be visible on the west coast, it was still a sight to see standing on top of a mountain.
Our group even shared our sunglasses with others in the lift lines and on the slopes. We met for
lunch after our tours and then again for après ski. After some hot tub action, most of us had
dinner in the hotel restaurant while watching the NCAA men’s basketball final game.
On Tuesday, a small group of people went on a side trip to June Mountain, a smaller sister
resort of Mammoth where the locals hang out. There were no lift lines and the runs were empty
throughout the day. The skiing and scenery was fantastic.
Temps were in the mid to upper 30’s every day. The snow was a little crusty in the mornings but
softened up nice around 10am on the east side of the mountain. As the day passed, it was wise to
make your way to the west side of the mountain. The lower elevations did get a little soft late
in the afternoon but those who were still skiing just stayed up in the higher elevation. Every
day we had a place to meet for lunch on the mountain and a place to après ski at the end of the
day. The Mammoth Mountain Inn shuttle bus made it easy to get to/from the main village for
dinner in the evenings.
Two members of our group, Ed and Janice, got to ride in a grooming machine early Thursday
morning for a few hours. They happened to meet a driver of a grooming machine the day before who
offered them the opportunity. Who would pass that up?
Thursday night everyone went out to Toomey’s for a group dinner. The food was fantastic and the
service was great, maybe because there were only 4 or 6 other people in the restaurant. Crowds
were not a problem for our entire trip, whether it was for lift lines, food lines on the
mountain or dinner and shuttle lines in the evening.
I think the best thing about Spring Fling is watching trip participants from different clubs,
many of whom do not know each other, get to interact together and become friends. We had a
really great group on people on Spring Fling 2024 and I’m already looking forward to Spring
Fling 2025!
